You don’t need any fancy gym equipment – just your bodyweight, a leash, and a trusty dog toy.

Before we dive into the nitty-gritty of these dog-friendly workouts, let’s talk about some important safety considerations. If you have a flat-faced breed like a French Bulldog, be sure to take extra breaks and monitor their breathing closely. These pups sometimes struggle to take in full breaths, so it’s crucial to keep an eye on their oxygen levels. And as always, consult your veterinarian if you have any concerns about your dog’s exercise capabilities.

Full-Body Workouts for Dogs (and Their Humans!)

Alright, let’s get moving! I’ve put together a series of full-body exercises that you and your canine companion can tackle together. These routines are designed to strengthen your muscles, boost your cardiovascular fitness, and deepen the bond between you and your furry friend.

Warm-Up Jog and Training

Start by taking your dog for a light jog to a nearby park, field, or beach. This is a great way to get the blood flowing and help your pup focus on the task at hand. Use a leash to control the pace and guide the route – repetition is key, as it helps your dog understand what to expect. If your pup gets distracted by every interesting scent, don’t worry – with a little patience and positive reinforcement, they’ll soon be a pro at this routine.

For an added cardio challenge, pick up the pace and run for a set distance or time. Remember to keep your core engaged and your form on point – you don’t want to risk any injuries!

Squat and Throw

Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart, holding your dog’s toy in both hands. Hinge at the hips, sending your butt back to lower into a squat. As you rise, engage your glutes and explode up onto your toes, arching your back to throw the toy as far back over your head as possible. When your pup retrieves the toy, that’s one rep. Shoot for 10 reps, and don’t forget to reward your furry friend with a tasty treat after every other rep.

Lunge and Twist

Place your feet hip-width apart and hold a treat in each fist. Step your left foot back and lower into a lunge, then twist your torso over your front thigh. Reverse the movement to return to standing, and repeat on the other side. That’s one rep. Complete 10 reps, rewarding your dog with a treat at the top of every other rep.

Backward and Lateral Shuffle

Set up a starting line on the ground. Break a treat into four pieces and let your dog smell it in your hands. From the line, run backward for 40 yards, then sprint forward to the starting point. Next, lateral-shuffle 40 yards to the left and back to start, then 40 yards to the right and back. Finally, run backward for 40 yards and sprint as fast as you can to the line. Give your pup a treat, and that’s one round. Complete 4 rounds total.

Burpee and Fetch

Start standing, then throw your dog’s toy as far as you can. Perform as many burpees as possible until your pup returns with the toy. Repeat this 3-5 times, trying to throw the toy further and beat your previous burpee count each round.

Core Twist and Treat

Sit on the ground with your feet flat and a treat broken into five pieces in your hand. Lean back about 45 degrees, lifting your heels. Keep your back straight as you twist your torso to the left and tap your hands to the floor, then twist to the right. That’s one rep. Complete 10 reps, rewarding your dog with a treat after every other rep.

Quad and Hamstring Stretch

Throw the toy as far as you can, then bring your right heel to your right butt to stretch your quad. Try to keep your knee in line and your pelvis tucked under. Hold the stretch until your dog returns, then repeat the throw and stretch with the opposite quad, hamstrings, calves, and upper back.

Cool Down and Recap

Finally, walk briskly back home. Take this time to reflect on your amazing workout and all the fun you had with your furry fitness buddy. Aren’t dogs the absolute best?
