How to Pick Up Dog Poop On Walks

How to Pick Up Dog Poop On Walks

As a proud dog owner, I’ve come to accept that picking up poop is simply part of the gig. It’s not the glamorous side of dog parenting, that’s for sure. But if we want to be responsible pet owners and keep our neighborhoods clean, it’s a necessary evil we must embrace.

The Dreaded Poop Scoop

I’ll never forget the first time I had to scoop up my pup’s business on a walk. I was new to the whole dog ownership thing and totally unprepared. I frantically searched my pockets, only to come up empty-handed. There was poor Rufus, squatting away, and me standing there with no way to clean up the mess. I ended up having to run back home, grab a bag, and sprint back to the scene of the crime. Not my proudest moment as a dog dad, I’ll admit.

Luckily, I learned from that experience. These days, I make sure I’m always stocked up on poop bags before heading out the door. In fact, I keep a few in my jacket pocket at all times, just in case. And let me tell you, those biodegradable bags are a total game-changer. No more worrying about plastic bags taking years to decompose in the landfill.

The Poop Pickup Technique

Once you’ve got your trusty poop bag in hand, the actual pickup process is pretty straightforward. Just turn the bag inside-out over your hand, scoop up the offending pile, and then flip the bag back the right way. Easy peasy, right? Well, not exactly. There’s a bit of an art to it, if you ask me.

I remember the first time I tried this maneuver, I ended up with poop residue on my fingers. Not a great look or feeling, let me tell you. But with a little practice, I got the technique down. Now I can scoop up Rufus’ deposits without so much as a single smudge. It’s all about that precision hand movement, my friends.

Disposal Dilemmas

Now, the real challenge comes when it’s time to actually dispose of the poop-filled bag. Where do you put this smelly little package? Just tossing it in the nearest trash can won’t cut it, as dog waste can contaminate water supplies and wreak havoc on the environment.

After a bit of research, I learned that the best bet is to find those designated dog waste bins at local parks or along my walking route. That way, I can ensure the poop is properly disposed of without causing any eco-disasters. And in a pinch, flushing it down the toilet is also an acceptable option, as long as I steer clear of flushing the actual bag.

Poop-Proof Accessories

Now, I know what you’re thinking – is there any way to make this whole poop pickup process a little less…unpleasant? Well, my friends, the answer is yes! There are actually all sorts of nifty little gadgets and accessories designed to make the job a breeze.

For starters, there are these handy pooper scooper tools that let you scoop up the poop without ever having to get your hands dirty. They’re basically like little rakes or tongs that pick up the mess and deposit it directly into the bag. No muss, no fuss.

I’ve also seen some clever backpack-style carriers that let your pup carry their own waste. Unfortunately, most of those seem to be made for smaller dogs, and poor Rufus is a bit of a chunky monkey. But for those with more petite pooches, it could be a game-changer.

The Importance of Picking Up

At the end of the day, picking up after your dog is just part of being a responsible pet owner. I have dogs, and I take that responsibility seriously. Not only does it keep our neighborhoods clean and prevent any unsavory encounters with stray piles, but it also helps protect the local ecosystem.

Dog waste can seriously contaminate water sources and harm wildlife if left unattended. So when nature calls for Rufus, I make sure to always have the right tools and techniques at the ready to handle the aftermath. It may not be the most glamorous aspect of dog parenting, but it’s one I’m proud to take on.
