I’ll never forget the day I first laid eyes on Lassiter. He was a white pit mix – so skinny and with a swollen leg that made him limp painfully as he tried to hobble away from me. The second my brake hit, he darted into the back of an old, abandoned house. I knew this place well – I’d rescued a mom and her puppies from there a few years back. It was a scorching hot day, and sweat trickled down my back as I went after him.
By the time I reached the house, Lassiter had already curled up amidst the trash and rubble, defeated. He didn’t even bother to lift his head as I approached – it was like he’d given up all hope. The poor guy was in excruciating pain, but he didn’t think I was there to help. He thought I would just leave him there to suffer.
It broke my heart to see him so broken. But with patience and a gentle touch, I was able to get a slip lead around his neck and coax him to stand. He was hot, exhausted, and wary, but he decided to put his trust in me. Slowly, he followed me back to the Jeep.
I named him Lassiter and rushed him straight to the Stray Rescue trauma center, where our incredible vet team could tend to his injuries. They’d keep him comfortable as his leg healed, and Stray Rescue would work on healing him emotionally, preparing him for a new life – a life that mattered, a life worth living.

The bitterly cold winter months can be especially brutal for stray and neglected animals. But thanks to the kindness and generosity of our supporters, Stray Rescue was able to provide warm shelter, nourishing meals, and life-saving medical care to countless dogs and cats in need.
Take Polar Express, for example. We received a call about a dog who had been lying injured near a construction site for days. When we arrived, we found a young pup who had been hit by a train, unable to walk. After rushing her to our on-site trauma center, our vets got to work, performing multiple surgeries to help her recover. With your support, Polar Express is now on the road to a full and healthy second chance.
Then there’s Weezer, a 7-month-old puppy who was discovered shivering and scared, his body ravaged by infection and an embedded harness. The poor thing was in excruciating pain, but thanks to your compassion, we were able to provide him with the urgent medical attention he needed to heal.
And let’s not forget Pilgrim, who was found literally frozen to the pavement. Our team rushed to warm him up and get him back to the safety of Stray Rescue. At the vet clinic, they discovered he had a broken pelvis – likely the result of being hit by a car. But with time, care, and love, this brave little guy has made a full recovery and found his forever home.

The harsh winter weather isn’t the only challenge these resilient pups face. Many of the dogs we encounter have been victims of starvation, neglect, and outright cruelty. Their frail, emaciated bodies bear the scars of a life spent foraging for scraps, searching for shelter, and fighting to survive.
Take Starvation, for example. How can a dog possibly survive the freezing temperatures when its body is literally deteriorating from lack of nourishment? They have to scour alleys and dumpsters, desperate to find anything edible, all while trying to find a safe place to escape the bitter cold before nightfall. It’s a heartbreaking reality that we’ve seen far too often this winter.
And then there are the brave mamas, like the ones we were able to rescue and bring to the safety of our foster homes, where they could give birth to their litters in comfort. These strong, stoic mothers had been forced to endure the dangers of street life, but thanks to your generosity, they’ll never have to worry about that again. They’ll be spayed, ensuring they never have to give birth on the streets, and they’ll have the chance to be adopted into loving forever homes.
It’s a miracle any of these dogs manage to survive the winter, but thanks to your support, we’re able to give them the care, comfort, and second chance they so desperately deserve.
