From Cynic to Canine Enthusiast: My Unexpected Journey to Puppy Parenthood
I have to admit, I was not always a dog person. In fact, for the majority of my life, I was more of a cat person – content to watch those fuzzy felines from afar, but never really feeling the urge to invite one into my home and heart. That all changed, however, when my family and I decided to welcome a furry new addition into our lives – a sweet, rambunctious puppy named Mango.
As I wrote in my blog, the decision to get a puppy was not one we made lightly. We knew that it would require a significant investment of time, energy, and patience – not to mention the occasional cleanup of those inevitable “accidents.” But something about Mango just spoke to us, and we couldn’t resist the pull of her big, soulful eyes and wagging tail.

But through it all, the love and joy that Mango brings into our home have made every sleepless night and frantic cleanup worth it. Watching her grow and thrive, seeing the way she’s brought our family closer together, and witnessing the transformative effect she’s had on Collin’s well-being – these are the moments that make it all worthwhile.
Finding Purpose and Resilience
As I navigate the ups and downs of this new chapter, I’m constantly reminded of the wise words of my friend and comrade, Kawal Ulanday: “Be mindful of your baseline while you are on the frontline.” As I mentioned in my previous post, this advice has been invaluable in helping me stay grounded and focused, even as the world around us grows increasingly complex and challenging.
In the midst of rising fascism, multiple crises, and the looming 2024 election, the home front can feel like a safe haven – a place to recharge and find the strength to continue the fight. And with Mango by our side, our family has discovered a newfound sense of purpose and resilience that extends far beyond the walls of our home.

As I write this, my husband Mychi and I are celebrating our anniversary, and I can’t help but reflect on the way our love story has intertwined with Mango’s arrival. Our love for each other has always been strong, but now it’s as if there’s an added layer of depth and meaning, as we navigate this new adventure together.
