Burying the Bunny Burrow

As I sat on my back patio, sipping my morning coffee, I noticed something peculiar out of the corner of my eye. There, in the far corner of my yard, was a furry little creature busily digging away at the earth. “Aha!” I exclaimed, “A bunny is making its home right under my nose!”

Now, I consider myself a pretty seasoned dog parent. My pup Wilson and I have been through it all – from chasing squirrels to navigating the dreaded zoomies. But this new bunny situation had me scratching my head. How was I going to keep my canine companion from inadvertently disturbing the new neighbors?

After some quick research, I learned that rabbits are masters of the underground tunnel system. These fluffy architects will dig deep burrows, with multiple entrances and escape routes, to create a cozy, protective home for their young. And with Wilson’s strong prey drive, I knew I had to act fast to fortify the fortress.

The solution? Bury a thick layer of wire mesh across the entire area where the bunny had begun its nest. This “bunny barrier” would prevent Wilson from tunneling down and discovering the babies, while still allowing the mama rabbit to freely come and go as she pleased. I opted for a sturdy hardware cloth, burying it several inches deep around the perimeter. It was a bit of work, but hey, ain’t no mountain high enough when it comes to protecting those fuzzy little kits!

Covering the Condo

Of course, rabbits don’t just dig down, they also love to burrow under fences and other structures. I had to get creative to seal off any potential escape routes from above ground as well. After a quick trip to the hardware store, I had the perfect solution – a large, heavy-duty plastic storage bin.

I carefully placed the bin over the nest, cutting a small hole in the side just big enough for the mama rabbit to squeeze through. This gave her access to feed and care for her babies, while keeping curious paws (both canine and feline) safely on the outside. It was like a bunny condo, complete with a built-in escape hatch!

Now, I know what you’re thinking – won’t the mama rabbit be scared off by this strange human-made structure? Well, let me tell you, these bunnies are far savvier than we give them credit for. As long as I kept my distance and didn’t mess with the nest directly, Mrs. Rabbit seemed to accept her new abode without a second thought. She’d pop in and out as needed, all while Wilson and I watched from a safe distance, mesmerized by the family’s comings and goings.

Other Bunny-Proofing Tactics

Of course, burying and covering the nest were just the beginning of my bunny-proofing adventures. I quickly learned that these fluffy friends have a whole arsenal of escape tactics up their furry sleeves.

One day, as I was mowing the lawn, I nearly had a heart attack when I realized I’d come dangerously close to running over a tiny, wiggling bundle. Luckily, I had been vigilant and spotted the nest just in time. From then on, I made sure to thoroughly inspect the yard before each mowing, carefully avoiding any areas that looked suspiciously like a bunny hideaway.

And let’s not forget about those persistent paws! Rabbits will stop at nothing to dig their way to freedom, so I knew I had to keep a close eye on my perimeter fencing as well. I made regular checks for any new escape routes, quickly sealing them up before Wilson could catch wind of the new tunneling project.

A Bunny-Filled Backyard

In the end, my efforts paid off tenfold. I got to witness the miracle of new life right in my own backyard, as those tiny kits grew from helpless balls of fluff into bouncing, curious bunnies. And Wilson? Well, he was content to simply lie in the grass, keeping a respectful distance as the rabbit family went about their business.

Sure, it took some work to bunny-proof my yard, but it was all worth it to see the mama rabbit and her babies thrive. Now, whenever I step outside, I’m greeted by the pitter-patter of little feet and the occasional curious nose peeking out from the bushes. It’s a bunny-filled backyard paradise, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
